Hungry Ghost Blues / Katabasis
The coupling of Roberto Marra's image set 'Hungry Ghost Blues' with Agata Mociani's 'Ketabasis' brings us to imaginary European stage with reflections on deep personal, sensual experiences. Marra's word content in Italian, 'Voglio, Bisogno, Mangia/I want, I need, I eat', promotes a thoughtful examination of consumption, while Agata Mociani's poem suggests gestures of touch and deep connection. Together, the poem and visual art give and take in a dynamic space throughout this Letter.
The design juxtaposes a square-edged Mondrien-like graphic, Modernist layout style with titles set in the Basquiat typeface, drawn to echo the organic gestures of Art Noveau. In these ways and in the weight, texture and colour of the two works' renderings, sharing, influencing, connection and reflecting are achieved.
Hiccough / An uncomfortable place in the unconscious
Intimate tones of sage and gold sprinkle through an airy ground for rob mclennen's poem 'A comfortable space in the unconscious' and Deborah Barnett's image series, 'Hiccough' to intertwine. mclennan's poem carried the reader from sensory reflection through conceptual horizons, while Barnett's 100+ individual images act as sign posts along a journey equally expansive. Air is the element of connection here, embellished with organic media and the idea of regenerative life.
NorthSouthNorteSur / Allegro Minor
Image maker Luciana Erregue draws parallels between cultural experiences in her image series NorthSouthNorteSud, providing a unique puzzle book in each Letter to untie and assemble. Also projecting the idea of an energy exchange, in Mari-Lou Rowley's poem Allegro Minor we are reminded of the sensations of relative pace, faster and slower identified with elements of musical notation. The design allows for the poem and images to balance in a diagonal counterpoint, with a dynamic that reinforces the suggestion of the ties that bind.
