Today I’d like to focus on the box itself that is home to the 52 Pickup 76 collection. I really enjoy the denim effect of the handmade paper box and how the numbers are printed so crisply against it, I think it creates a nice contrast with the muddled lines. The inspiration behind the title is also made quite clear with the use of the card face and the shape of the box. I also love that “pickup” in the title takes on two meanings with this packaging, both referring to the card game and the truck images that mirror each other on the card face. On top of all this, all 52 poems, including the title page, end matter and specifications sheet perfectly inside this custom made packaging.

Today I’d like to focus on the box itself that is home to the 52 Pickup 76 collection. The different fonts being used adds to the reading experience in a fun way and communicates the emotions of each word. I very much enjoy how this poem can also be read as a personal manifesto for the author.

Introducing Leaf Love—a collection where the “leaves” of the forest meet the “leaves” of the book. I am exploring the experienced skin of our world: the scars, the silvered tears, and the insect-bitten edges that serve as the true text of survival.
In these tiny sculptural fragments in my series entitled “hiccough”, I am inspired by Stein’s “Tender Buttons” the spine of the book mirrors the spine of the maker. These are tactile anchors for a digital age—proof that to be wounded is to be authored.

Tracing the chapbook’s production, the covers were letterpress printed in two colours on handmade paper from La Papeterie Saint-Armand in Québec—a sheet that takes impressions beautifully and holds the ink exceptionally well. Once printed, the covers were folded, paired with the interior pages, and bound with a pamphlet stitch.

It was a pleasure working with @ágnescserháti and Rufus Books to bring this project to life! Thanks also to Someone Editions’ studio artists for their help with the production.

Looking at Leaf Love, I keep returning to the way the work disrupts traditional reading, with pages serving not as containers for text but as the text itself. The material is pierced, misshapen, deconstructed, and stitched back together—much like the ways we mend our emotional wounds while the body remembers what caused them.

For me, Deborah Barnett’s alternative book objects bear marks of pressure, care, and time, reflecting what it means to hold experience rather than simply pass through it.

Leaf Love opens as a one-person exhibition by Deborah Barnett at @183gallery on April 17. Stay tuned — more details coming soon.

With Valentine’s Day two days away, Deborah Barnett’s HEART repurposes a tool of the press as a symbol of love.

Printed in 2011 in a limited edition of just five, this 12 × 16” letterpress broadside uses a honeycomb bedplate as the inked surface, allowing the tool itself to become the image. The dots you see are holes in the bedplate; the L-shaped piece was tilted to create a heart shape.

Spending time with Leaf Love, I’m struck by how Deborah Barnett imbues paper with such vulnerability, lending it the quality of being as delicate and exposed as bare skin. The material appears worked and weathered in a way that feels organic, as though it has absorbed experience over time.

Sharing the gallery with Olivia Mae Sinclair’s BE/HEALING, I noticed a subtle tension between the two works. While Leaf Love embraces scars as markers of experience, with pages folded, pierced, and stitched, BE/HEALING feels like a refusal to reopen old wounds in the name of healing, granting permission for release without hiding what has been carried.

To me, both works seem to sit with what remains, recognizing the traces of lived experiences while making space for change and growth. As alternative book objects, they also call for a different kind of reading—one that involves visual, tactile, and emotional engagement.

Both Leaf Love and BE/HEALING will be on view until Feb 18. All works are available for purchase, starting at $30. DM us or visit our website to arrange a studio visit.
